Virginia Governor Ralph Northam just declared war on gun owners with this announcement

245

In the wake of the tragic shooting in Virginia Beach, the community is trying to come together for healing.

But not everyone sees a tragedy in the same way.

And Virginia Governor Ralph Northam just declared war on gun owners with this announcement.

Leftists like Virginia Governor Ralph Northam never want to let a crisis go to waste.

They try to make the most of the moment to ram through policies that otherwise wouldn’t have a chance.

And whenever tragedy strikes and a mass murderer uses a firearm to kill innocent people, the inevitable calls for gun control follow.

So when Northam held a press conference to call for a special session of the state legislature just days after the murders, gun owners knew what was coming next.

But what happened next blew expectations.

WTOP reports:

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam called for a special session of the Virginia General Assembly to consider passing what he called “common sense” gun laws…

These are the laws Northam proposed:

— Universal background checks
— Child access prevention
— One gun a month limits
— Banning assault weapons, including bump stocks
— Requirement to report lost or stolen guns
— Allowing localities to ban guns from municipal buildings
— Red flag laws

“I will be asking for votes and laws, not thoughts and prayers,” Northam said at the conference.

A January news release from Northam’s office pitching a gun control package includes many of the ideas he proposed in Tuesday’s news conference, such as red flag laws and child access prevention.

“We must do more than give our thoughts and prayers. We must give Virginians the action they deserve,” Northam said.

The truth is, none of these policies would’ve prevented the murderer from killing his coworkers in Virginia Beach.

As Donald Trump’s Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney pointed out on Meet the Press, “You have laws on the books that make murder illegal, and yet people still do it. Laws are not going to fix everything.”

The special session will convene shortly, and many law-abiding gun owners are nervous about what will happen.

What are your thoughts?

  1. I’m confused, you are all for laws against abortion, but complain that laws don’t work when it comes to gun control. Please explain your hypocrisy.

    • It is quite easy to understand and not hypocritical at all. Abortions are an act to kill a child (unborn or as some want it, born). Guns are a constitutionally guaranteed right. Gun laws are only followed by the law abiding. Criminals do not follow them. So as a result gun laws take away the ability for the law abiding to protect themselves or possibly you, from the murderous criminal elements.

          • Then, you are admitting that gun laws are only followed by those who follow the laws. So, any gun law passed will not be followed by criminals. Right? You are drowning in your own pablum.

          • No, I am for gun control which is different than banning all guns. But it needs to be all states having the same gun control laws or it won’t work.

          • I totally agree with Davi. I looked up the constitution (Of which I carry in my purse) and it doe not say women have a right to have an abortion. It’s only these “free-spirit,” hippies,”who want “Free EVERYTHING” We have left overs, but which of them went on to be a contributing HUMAN BEING?

          • The Supreme Court used the 3rd, 4th 5th, 9th and 14th Amendment of the Constitution to rule abortions are legal. Take it up with them, I am just stating facts.

        • Kaci: what’s the wording in the amendments that you are reading to say women have been given the right to kill the unborn technically to torture to death the unborn. I haven’t seen the wording.

          • There is nothing in the Constitution about
abortion. The word is not mentioned anywhere.
The support for it has been manufactured by those
who do not hold life dear. These same people who
            manufacture support for abortion squirm
when a serial killer is sentenced to death.
            Go figure.

          • Yes, explain to me why you are for the death penalty, for wars but against abortion which kills only cells, not a living person.

          • In the pre-Roe contraception case Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), the Court did hold that “penumbras, formed by emanations” or various interpretations of the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Ninth Amendments protect a right to privacy. But in deciding Roe, the Warren court located the right to privacy in the 14th Amendment’s explicit protection of the right to liberty. Regardless, the Court’s understanding of the rights that protect reproductive freedom expanded beyond just privacy decades ago.

        • Over 50% of the unique human beings involved in an abortion die from it.
Some “expert” claiming the right to define personhood over an innocent one fro conception to natural death is way out of his/her league.

          • Human beings don’t’ die from abortions, but women die from childbirth every single day. Every minute, at least one woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth – that means 529,000 women a year. In addition, for every woman who dies in childbirth, around 20 more suffer injury, infection or disease – approximately 10 million women each year.
            – According to World Health Organization

Essentially that means every single DAY, 1,500 women will die unnecessarily during childbirth.
Guess how many women die during legal abortions?  Only 12 in 2009 for the entire US.

        • If you believe in God you will know what he thinks of you aborting his creation. And if you do not believe in God, well I would not want to be in your shoes when you leave this world and stand before Him.

        • Dear Kaci,
Abortion is the murder of a human being. Created the moment sperm and egg joined their DNA to form a new and unique Human. The U.S. Constitution protects “rights”, it does not grant “rights” to anyone to do anything. Rights are given by GOD. Remember the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self evident; That all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…”

        • You are a bonified moron Mssss. Stahl. I would tell you to go back to sleep, but it’s obvious that you’ve never woken up to begin with. 😏

          • God is, indeed, mentioned in The Constitution, just after Article VIII, above the signatures:

“done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the independence of the United States of America the Twelfth In witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names,”

          • *giggle*

The use of the word “Lord” at the bottom of the Constitution was not a religious reference. That was a common way of expressing the date, in both religious and secular contexts.

          • Do facts scare you?

The Court has held, however, that Bill of Rights protections of free speech, assembly, and religious exercise (First Amendment), along with freedom from forced quartering of troops (Third), unreasonable searches and seizures (Fourth), and forced self-incrimination (Fifth) create “zones of privacy.” Further, the Ninth Amendment’s protection of unenumerated rights could be said to protect privacy. These “zones,” the Court held, are places into which the government cannot unreasonably intrude. Roe claimed that the law robbed her of her right to privacy as protected by the combination of Bill of Rights amendments, and of her liberty as protected by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The Court agreed with Roe and held that “the right to privacy includes the abortion decision.”

        • Abortion is NOT protected by the constitution, nor was it protected by Roe v. Wade. The only thing Roe v. Wade allowed for under the guise of protection was the ability for a woman to confidentially discuss her healthcare with a designated provider. The Constitution DOES NOT give anyone the right to murder a child in utero. It does, however, grant states the rights to regulate abortion (and anything else NOT specified in the Constitution) under the tenth amendment. If I’m wrong, please show me SPECIFICALLY where abortion is listed as protected under the constitution.

        • no they are not and women DO NOT have any special rights .. there are a lot of folks that think that and others think that the constitution also demands the separation of church and state but that is bogus but some things require an intellect to understand..

      • Well said. Btw, the fundamental reason for 2A was to protect the citizenry from tyrannical government (like the one that wants to take away 2A)

          • Kaci: “Oh, I have no doubt that if” guns “become illegal that” people “will still have them”. So what is with your double standard?

          • Dumb aoc mentality ! Oh I have no doubt Eve could not st try ay the heck away from the dam tree in the cirst place . They had one LAW

          • Rick, it was not Eve who was at fault. Adam did not take his leadership role as a man. He should have told Eve to come away, but he didn’t. End of man’s reign before it even began.

      • As a Gun Nut myself you NRA’s Gun Nuts refuse to come together and endorse a common sense Gun Control law for all 50 states. A Gun Control law will reduce the amount of Non-US citizens, felon, underage, convicted of domestic violence and the mental ill persons. We need to support stiff penalties for all unlawful person found guilty in the use of a firearm and in their possession. The Death penalty for all persons guilty of causing the death of Law Enforcement person with no parole, and minimum jail time for the use of a firearm in committing a felony. A thorough Background should be perform before anyone can purchase a firearm, a ten day minimum (working day) for the check and then apply for a permit to buy. Any un-license person selling a firearm should receive at least 5 years in prison. If the unlawful sold firearm is use in a crime and can be traced to the seller, a minimum penalty of ten years should be given. The laws must be the same in all states. If the NRA and the Gun Nuts do not come up a common sense laws to reduce gun violence narrow minded representative will come up with laws such California, Florida, and Illinois all have confiscatory Red Flag Laws and other states may follow, that law must be eliminated. You Gun Nuts can fume about the old & outdated 2nd Amendment until hell freeze over it-will-not-help. ONLY law abiding US Citizens should have the right to bear arms.

        • Then, you are admitting that gun laws are only followed by those who follow the laws. So, any gun law passed will not be followed by criminals. Right?
You are drowning in your own pablum.

          • No, I think that gun control is very much needed nationwide. All states must have the same gun control laws in order for it to work.

        • There are consequences, unless you’re an illegal alien in California. Then you get all the perks the working stiffs can’t afford, including abortions and sex change operations.

      • Michael Skok, of course you are confused because you don’t have the faintest clue what the problem really is.

      • You must be a NRA member or you work for the gun manufacturers. Gun Control will not stop all the US Citizens and non Americans of terrorist crimes, But the US can make it a crime for non-citizens, felons and those that are charged with domestic crimes, and diagnosed with a mental illness to own and use firearms. Only license gun dealers should be allowed to sell firearms in the US. Only US Citizens with a gun purchase permit or a concealed handgun license should be able to purchase a firearm at Gun Shows and Pawn Shops, and from gun dealers. All background checks should be at least 5 working days or more if needed. US Citizens must be 21 years old (Military exempt) to own, buy firearms, ammo and gunpowder. Any person that take the life of a Law Enforcement person should receive life imprisonment or the death penalty, no parole. All assault type firearms should require a permit and registered with the ATF the same as the fully automatic firearms and be monitor the same by the ATF. It should be unlawful to have extended ammo clip in a firearm with an extended ammo clip. It should be unlawful to have a bump stock or any device to increase the Rounds Per minute when firing the weapon. All suggested gun laws violators should receive harsh penalties that include jail and fines, and should be the same in ALL states and Wash.,DC. NOW, tell me how the above suggestions will infringe on law abiding citizens?

          • He also does not understand all this hyperbole regarding ‘limited control, special circumstances, common sense laws,’ all do infringe and that a great amount of people currently are in illegal possession of firearms. He does not state and the gun-grabbers never do, how they will first remove all the illegal guns before acting illegally against legal owners. Common sense. Worry about the criminals.

    • Laws are supposed to be written to protect the innocent and punish the guilty.
      Abortion executes the innocent
The proposed gun laws punish the innocent.
      Understand now?

        • Kaci: The courts can only punish according to the law. For instance, for procession 5 pds of marihuana you get 3 to 5 years, for 10 pds you 5 to 10 years as the law says. The judge can decide the number of years from 3 to 5 and nothing else.

        • Free boarder crossing, why are passports required to sail or fly from a foreign country? Treat it like the southern boarder. Does that make you second guess free passage for all? Probably not, you seem pretty dizzy.

    • I’m all for gun control If you can’t control it, get some training until you can. Then get your CCW and carry it with you at all times. Be prepared. If you see a gun free zone, like Starbucks, avoid it at all cost.

    • It’s always women like Kaci and metrosexual city sissies who look like men, who are ignorant of everything about he constitution, since they neve took history or took liberal revisionist history and have no understanding of why the amendments are there or what the intent behind each of them was. The 2nd amendment makes evey male citizen of the US a member of the national militia, to protect and defend the US from enemies both foreign and DOMESTIC. When our govenment gets to be a tyranny, which is close, we have a constitutional obligation to overthrow it and reinstate the democratic republic it was meant to be.

        • In the landmark Heller and Macdonald decisions, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized that the Founders considered the Second Amendment a failsafe “Individual Right” that would provide the American people with the ways and means “to oppose an Oppressive Governmental Military Force if the constitutional order ever broke down in America.”

          • A well-regulated militia isn’t any Tom, Dick or Harry. Please, even you are smart enough to know that.

        • I was quoting US Supreme Court cases. Don’t be ignorant, look them up. Here is another case: 1990 US vs. Verdugo-Urquirdez: The US Supreme Court detrmined “the people” means that all citizens and legal aliens in the US may bear arms.

        • You really don’t understand the true meaning of the term “well regulated” in reference to ‘militia’ in the 2nd Amendment. In addition, the term ‘infringe,’ when it comes to the keeping and bearing of arms, includes nearly all laws that prevent any law-abiding person in this nation… they are all definitely infringements.

    • Giving someone the right to murder is a crime. It is not the same as allowing someone to own a defensive weapon. You cannot confuse laws with constitutional rights . Yes laws are broken every single day so having more laws will not change anything . Punishing someone who breaks the law by committing murder is a lot different than someone who owns a gun who’s never broken the law. Constitutional rights are built into the fabric of our government .

      • Abortions rights are protected under the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th and 14th Amendments.

Regulated guns is not violating the 2nd Amendment, so says the Supreme Court.

          • ROE v WADE: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th and 14th Amendments
            EISENSTADT v. BAIRD: 1st and 14th Amendments
            GRISWOLD v. CONNECTICUT: 1st, 4th, 9th, 14th Amendments
            WHOLE WOMAN’S HEALTH ET AL. v. HELLERSTEDT: 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 14th
Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey: 1st and 14th

          • Which one of his common sense gun laws state that he is for banning all guns?

These are the laws Northam proposed:

            — Universal background checks
            — Child access prevention
            — One gun a month limits
            — Banning assault weapons, including bump stocks
            — Requirement to report lost or stolen guns
            — Allowing localities to ban guns from municipal buildings
            — Red flag laws

    • It’s not hypocrisy, Granted I don’t believe in killing baby’s but it’s not the same with gun laws. When you take guns away from honest people then the bad guys will be the only ones with guns. Do you notice all these shootings are don in Gun Free zones?? Criminals are not stupid, they know if no on is going to shoot back they can get away with murder just like those who preform abortions, the baby can’t complain or protect itself! it’s the same thing but different!!

        • By banning just one gun he is violating the 2nd. Which part of “shall not be infringed” don’t you understand?

          • Not true.

            What are Illegal Firearms?
            1. Unregistered firearms.
            2. Firearms with serial number removed.
            3. Stolen or illegally obtained firearms.
            4. Automatic weapons or machine guns.
            5. Sawed-off shotguns – Federal law states the barrel of a shotgun must be at least 18 inches.
            6. Silencers.

        • Kaci wrote: “1. Unregistered firearms.

          1. In the still free parts of the US gun registration is not req’d.
          2. and 3. Do you think criminals will surrender these? ROFL
          4. Why do the police & swat needs these then?
          5. That is 16″. If it is shorter, it is classified as a handgun.
          6. Why do the FBI, CIA need them?

          • @Kaci Stahl:

The correct name is Suppressor, not silencer. And they are not illegal to own, all it requires to own one (in states that allow them) is a 6 – 9 month (can take longer depending on the work load at the B.A.T.F.E.) federal background investigation and a $200 fee for the permit (AKA Tax Stamp).

And machine guns are not illegal to own either, they are also restricted to states that allow them, and they require the same $200 (per weapon) Tax Stamp that is needed to purchase a suppressor and the same background investigation. And you can’t just go on down to your nearest gun shop to buy one, anything newer than the mid 1980’s is illegal to purchase unless it’s for law enforcement or military use. If the weapon is not “transferable” you can’t buy it legally.

Red flag laws are the precursor to seizing firearms from everyone that doesn’t have mental health issues. Once we go down that road there is no stopping it until all of the guns are in the hands of criminals. Those criminals will be: Law Enforcement, Military, and anyone else who refuses to surrender their guns.

And none of the proposed gun laws would have prevented the Virginia Beach shooting or any other mass shooting.

It’s super easy to look up the laws and regulations pertaining to suppressors and fully automatic weapons ownership, and you would not look like someone with egg on her face because she didn’t know what she was talking about. A little education goes a long way at times, perhaps not, in your case.

    • I think that you’re a decent person, Kathy. I want to say that first off because you’re responses seem genuine. So I’m going to say, I see where you’re coming from…people will just go get guns regardless of the law, people will get abortions regardless of the law, so why fight for one and not the other?
Here’s the reason that conservatives such as myself see abortion differently than gun laws:
      I. Abortion is a business is heavily abused by doctors. Most of us do not want to capsize the rights of women (that would be counterproductive to myself) as much as we want to hold doctors responsible for malpractice. Understandably, unborn babies would be interesting research subjects, much like dead bodies are used to research. It’s part of the practice and dead fetuses will be studied make no mistake on the lack of morale in the sciences. But what most conservatives are concerned about is it becoming a lucrative business. We don’t want to give doctors incentives to urge young women to get rid of their children or do just get rid of children themselves so they can get a new sports car. Will it happen? Of course, legal or not. But putting laws will stop most instances as doctors make enough they will be a little leery about their practices.

II. Abortions tend to be done by law abiding citizens rather than non-law abiding citizens (Movie stars are probably the only case where large scale citizens would seek out abortions in the mid-1900s when abortion clinics were not lawful because they slept around too much). Guns on the other hand really end up more or less across the board. No matter the law, when you make something illegal you are really only punishing the people doing the right thing and letting the scales tip in the favor of people against the law.

III. You mentioned the US constitution, which I’d be very interested in how you arrived to those particular amendments being in conflict with the II amendment. Madison, who aided in the first ten amendments, the Bill of Rights, was many things, but stupid he was not. However, Madison was not in the convention in which John Adams (I love the guy truly, so this horrified me) and other members of congress back in 1775-1776 wanted to ban guns belonging to Tories ONLY. This way they cannot fight back. The government is not about to just remove guns entirely, that would be stupid and create a situations where other nations could threaten us. The problem rests in this. What sort of power does the government then have over it’s citizens. If you believe in a republic (with one of it’s branches democracy) then you understand that this creates a power move for the other two branches. It’s a lot of trust that you place on the goodness of the administrations ruling over you, but conservatives are skeptical by nature. We don’t like it. I cannot argue abortion on this as it is the normal citizens attacking their own offspring and not really a power play of how the government should operate. I’ll leave that to another fellow conservative to add where necessary.

IV. Now let’s get to the legalization factor of this whole mess:
Abortion (We’re not speaking of the extreme cases of rape and the life of the mother as these should be handled quite differently – I do agree that these are extreme situations) in many cases are not “medical conditions.” They are a result of a choice of promiscuity or a choice or irresponsibility. I myself must confess that I am a virgin and have been horrendously teased hundreds of times for living a lifestyle that I feel is the most responsible for a budding business woman with little cash and no husband. I’m not saying that everyone has to live like this, but imagine that I have to pay for my coworkers and those same people who picked on me mercilessly for over a decade with my taxes that I earned responsibly for them to live their lifestyle. I see it unfair. I would be more willing to be lenient to laws concerning abortion if I didn’t have to pay for it.
Now we get to gun laws. Do you pay for guns bought and housed by gun owners every year (minus the military and trust me, neither the left or the right are going to give that up)? No. You don’t support it, so you don’t have to pay for it. Sounds fair. And if the argument is I don’t support it, but I have to live with the consequences of people mishandling guns, then I’ve got that one covered too! 1.) People die in mishandled vehicle crashes, people die with mishandled work-related machinery, from alcohol abuse, and so on. Should we ban our cars, air-planes (that one’s for All-Out-Crazy, she knows who she is), construction equipment, lifts, elevators, power-machines, factory equipment, and everything else that could cause serious injury? Some of these are actually more deadly than guns. 2.) If we actually take time to talk to the right and left wing people about the gun laws, I think we’d find that most people both want certain things. Conservatives would like a licensing process so not everyone on the street can pick up a gun. We don’t want someone with a history of serious mental illness to hold a weapon! We want people with a clean bill of health that will keep their guns out of children’s reach and use it for defense purposes to own weapons. I most people can agree with that.

      V. Many on the left and right understand that guns actually protect people. PragerU had a video claiming that women’s rights are violated without guns because guns PROTECT women. CollegeHumor (notoriously picks on conservatives and a channel I tend to disregard) had a video claiming that African American rights are violated without guns because guns PROTECT blacks. Honestly, both are correct!
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iKBEJp92CA – PragerU
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ZoH5P6UIE – College Humor
      Go look yourself.
Now riddle me this…who does abortion protect?

    • A lot of the laws he’s proposing are copies of laws already on the books. None of them prevented the latest shooting.

      • Why don’t we get all the states to agree to these regulations and then enforce them and see what happens? I am betting that we have at least a third fewer killings.

    • Explain yours, child. Dems are for killing innocent children even post birth and they and their friends are doing all of the killings. Seems to me if we want to cure both we rid ourselves of Demonrats and no one is harmed.

        • A zygote is the beginning of a baby developing. So actually in God’s eyes it is a human being. For it God said “before I formed you in the womb I knew you”. (Jeremiah 1:5) So explain that one.

    • Oh, and you brought up the death penalty. Why do clowns like you ALWAYS bring up the death penalty? The death penalty is reserved for crimes of a heinous nature where the criminal who committed it is determined to be beyond redemption (like that a-hole in Oklahoma who blew up the Federal building murdering hundreds). It is NEVER decided lightly and the perpetrated is granted a number of appeals to prove their innocence even after the sentence is passed down. Explain to me, please, what crime was committed by the fetus, other than the crime of being an ‘inconvenience’? And yes, sometimes wars are necessary, expecially if they are in retaliation for strikes on our citizenry (like Japan in WWII) or to control the expansion of fascism (like the Nazi regime in the same aforementioned War). Would you rather we sit on our hands and do nothing? This invites terrorists to strike us on our own soil, or don’t you remember what occurred on September 11, 2001?

  2. What an idiot! “Gun laws” are a sham. They keep good people from having self protection, and opens the door for potential murderers to be the only person with a weapon to kill the helpless, unarmed victim.

  3. No, this a-hole would rather wear blackface and tell blacks he loves them all. Hypocrisy knows no limits in Virginia! I’ll bet that jerk has a gun in his desk!

    • Doesn’t need a gun in his desk, he has armed guards that follow him around. Maybe we should un arm those protecters. Dumb a$$ !!!!!!!!

      • You are totally correct…First thing he has to do is make it illegal that politicians have armed guards they don’t need a firearm to protect the person, especially an assault weapon.

      • Let’s arm all of our government officials withguards who carry slingshots. The gun is as much of the offense of weapon as it is an offense of weapon . In the right hands it is not a crime to carry . In the wrong hands any weapon is dangerous

  4. Gee I went out the other night and left my gun right on the table, I actually forgot to take it with me, wow when I came home it was still there, gee and it didn’t kill anyone!

  5. Gee I went out the other night and left my gun right on the table, I actually forgot to take it with me, wow when I came home it was still there, gee and it didn’t kill anyone! And NO I never said this before!

    • Golly Mr. Dave, you mean your gun didn’t grow arms and legs and cause a problem? Wow!! LOL But I agree with you. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Kaci needs to learn that.

        • Because it is the SOLDIERS who kill, not the guns. The guns themselves do not walk outta the barracks and start shooting people at random.

          • I am trying to make a point. The right is always saying that guns don’t kill. But they do kill.

          • Guns are the only weapon that was designed just to kill.

And we do regulate rat poison, cigarette smoke and doctors.

        • If the soldiers never picked up those guns they would just lay there. They don’t kill people. If that is the case, then all of mine are defective because none of them have killed anybody and I own a 12 gauge shotgun, a 380, a 9mm, a 357 magnum, a 38 special bodyguard, a 45, and a 40. I have laid mine on my coffee table and it has just laid there. None of them has killed ever anybody. And as for kids using them and killing, my daughter has been around guns all her life (she’s 28 now) and nobody has been killed by her. Teach kids the proper handling of guns and nobody will get hurt.

  6. There is no hypocrisy. We don’t need more laws on guns. We need to enforce the laws already on the books, and we sure don’t need gun control. How well is gun control working in Chicago? Not well at all. Gun control isn’t gonna do anything but allow more criminals to have access to guns. Gun control will allow more criminals to have access to black market sales. Gun control will make it to where criminals can break into houses and the owners won’t be able to protect themselves. A 357 is faster than dialing 9-1-1.

    • Gun laws don’t work in Chicago because surrounding cities do not have the same laws. But you know this, you just want to play dumb. You want any excuse why gun laws don’t work, just so you can have a gun. Forget about the children that are murdered each year by guns. But that is okay as long as you get to keep your guns. Hypocrite.

      • Gun laws do not work because criminals do not obey the laws. That’s why they are called criminals. If you take away the guns from honest, law-abiding citizens then only the criminals will.have guns, and violent gun.crime will increase.

The governor of Virginia is an idiot.

          • Let us look at how well laws “work” when “progressives” and those pushing “sensible” gun (and immigration) laws work in a “forward looking” place like SF. Remember the case of the young woman shot by the illegal alien, multiple deported, multiple convicted felon on the loose who just “happened” to “find” a gun “lost by a BLM federal agent and “accidently” shot the woman walking with her father?. What happened in strict gun controls in SF and CA in that case? Well the SF “jury” acquitted him of any charge resulting in her death and the CA “judge” sentence him to time served for the gun charges (possession by a felon, illegal alien, stolen gun) an released him apparently without notifying ICE. .A lot of laws violated and NO punishment for PC reasons! THE PURPOSE OF GUN “CONTROL” IS CITIZEN DISARMAMENT! “Progressive” power trip.

          • Your “facts” a little inaccurate. First, these two facts are undisputed by the prosecution and defense:

            1. On July 1, 2015, Kate Steinle was fatally struck in the back by a single bullet as she walked on Pier 14 with her father to view the San Francisco Bay.
            2. Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, a Mexican citizen illegally in the United States, fired the gun that killed Steinle.

Now the rest of the facts.

At the time of Steinle’s death, Garcia Zarate had been convicted of nonviolent drug crimes and deported five times since the early 1990s.

In fact, Garcia Zarate had never been convicted of a violent crime before Steinle’s shooting — his previous convictions were for nonviolent drug crimes and illegal entry. Lax border security, too, does not appear to be a factor since Garcia Zarate was caught by border patrol agents each time he entered the country under the Obama administration.

Kate Steinle was not hit directly, but rather the bullet hit the concrete ground and then ricocheted up to hit her. The gun was a SIG Sauer pistol that had been stolen four days prior to Steinle’s death from a federal Bureau of Land Management ranger’s car parked in the area.

On the eve of trial, via subpoena, the defense obtained a redacted police report from the police department of an auto burglary adjacent to the BLM ranger’s car. The DA had withheld this report from the defense during discovery. This report confirmed that there was not a single auto burglary in the area, but rather over half a dozen break-ins, most likely by an experienced group of thieves (notably, Garcia Zarate had no history for theft crimes). Some of the items stolen from the BLM ranger were discarded at the location of the second car. The second car had numerous items of value taken, including laptop computers, passports, credit cards, and a birth certificate.

Importantly, no items of value were found on the defendant at the time of his arrest four days later. He had no money and no one came forward to say Garcia Zarate had ever offered to sell any of the stolen items. No physical or forensic evidence tied Garcia Zarate to the crimes despite police attempts to find it. In fact, police investigators specifically asked Woychowski to preserve items he found by his car for fingerprinting, hoping to connect Garcia Zarate to the offense. Ultimately, police found no witnesses, no fingerprint match, and no DNA evidence connecting Garcia Zarate to the crime.

Defense lawyers said the shooting was an accident that happened when Garcia Zarate, who had a history of drug crimes but no record of violence, found the gun wrapped in a T-shirt or cloth under his seat on the pier just seconds before it discharged in his hands. Matt Gonzalez of the public defender’s office said his client had never handled a gun and was scared by the noise, prompting him to fling the weapon into the bay, where a diver fished it out a day later.

During the trial, jurors watched video from Garcia Zarate’s four-hour police interrogation, in which he offered varying statements about his actions on the pier. At one point he said he had aimed at a “sea animal,” and at another point, he said the gun had been under a rag that lay on the ground near the waterfront and that it fired when he stepped on it.

Gonzalez said it was clear in the video that Garcia Zarate — who has spent much of his adult life behind bars, was living on the street before the shooting, and has a second-grade education — did not fully understand what the officers were asking him through an officer’s Spanish translation.

Grainy surveillance footage taken by a camera positioned a quarter-mile away showed that just before Garcia Zarate took his seat on the pier, a group of six people gathered at the spot. Gonzalez said it was possible that those people had discarded the gun that killed Steinle.

Steinle was not hit directly, but rather the bullet hit the concrete ground and then ricocheted up to hit her. The gun was a SIG Sauer pistol that had been stolen four days prior to Steinle’s death from a federal ranger’s car parked in the area.

The defense also presented evidence regarding the SIG Sauer’s propensity to accidentally fire.

It’s an elite handgun intended for law enforcement and military personnel who may need to fire it with split-second notice. Hence, it has a hair trigger in single-action mode. Even among well-trained users, it has a lengthy history of accidental discharges.

Most police agencies don’t make records public, but those that do reveal disturbing data. In a four-year period (2012-2015), the New York City Police Department reported 54 accidental firearm discharges, 10 involving SIG Sauers. Los Angeles County reported more than 80 accidental discharges between 2010 and 2015, five involving SIG Sauers. From 2005 to January 2011, the San Francisco Police Department reported 29 accidental discharges (a time when it issued SIG Sauers as its primary sidearm)…

The SIG Sauer in Lopez Sanchez’s case has three features prone to accidents:

            1. No safety lever, making it perpetually ready for firing.
            2. Manufacturer-issued trigger pull of 4.4 pounds of force (in single-action mode), which is among the lightest on the market.
            3. An unlabeled decocking lever despite being essential to disengage the single-action mode. (The SIG Sauer safety manual urges “DO NOT THUMB THE HAMMER DOWN the consequences can be serious injury or death — only and ALWAYS use the decocking lever.”)

New York City requires officers using SIG Sauers to disable its single-action function because the hair trigger is too dangerous. Those using the gun can only do so in double-action mode, which has a 10-pound trigger pull.

Still capable of accidentally discharging, it provides some modicum of greater safety. However, single-action was not disabled on the handgun involved in this case, which Lopez Sanchez says he found wrapped in a T-shirt, thereby concealing its danger.

Acquitted of murder in state court, Garcia Zarate is currently incarcerated pending federal trial; convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Zarate was indicted on two federal charges of being a felon and undocumented immigrant in possession of a firearm and ammunition. San Francisco authorities say they will turn Garcia Zarate over to federal immigration authorities, although it is not immediately clear as to when. The federal gun charges carry a penalty of up to ten years in prison, after which — if he were convicted — he presumably would be deported.

No one is trying to ban all guns. This is just a fear tactic used by the NRA and gun manufacturers for people to buy more guns.

In the first six months after Trump was elected, gun sales tumbled by 9 percent. Vista, the firearms manufacturer that owns brands like American Eagle and Bushnell, saw profits drop 27 percent in the first three months of the year—a reversal the company called an “unprecedented decline in demand for ammunition and firearms.” Individual contributions to the NRA, which account for roughly half its revenue, could also take a sharp plunge; the last time a Republican occupied the White House, the NRA’s membership flatlined.

      • Kavi Stahl, what they never tell you is how many lives are SAVED by a legal concealed carry gun owner. This is something you might want to investigate further instead of just parroting a leftist agenda.

          • BS ! There is actually a living woman who survived an abortion and she travels around and talks about it .
            Look it up TROLL

          • Gianna Jessen was aborted at 7 1/2 months she lived and is alive, and actually forgave her mother
            TROLL

          • I beg to differ. To your credic you have got the radical lib tripe down solid. I hope you can pay your student debt. As you probably do not read the bible (Gods word) 2 Thessalonians 2:11 might apply to you. You are wrong to say that in an abortion no “child” is killed. It plainly says in Psalm 139:13-16 that God knows us and has our very days numbered before we are even born. Now if God sees us as “human” even before we are formed in our mothers womb, should not we also agree with that since, whether you believe it or not, God does run things whether or not we agree with Him. He is always right. I’m sure that you are for LGBT too so please read Romans 1:21-32. Please remember that I am not saying these things, but men inspired by Gods Holy Spirit which is a part of the Godhead.

Now, I’ll throw in an old saying my dad told me. He said”it is better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it” and somehow that made a lot of sense to me.

          • I have a bachelor’s degree in Ministry, I also was a Sunday school teacher for over 20 years. Read the bible, cover to cover over 3 times. So yes, I know about the bible and I Know what is written in the bible.

Either your god is all knowing or he is not. If he is all knowing then he knows before a woman does that she will abort her pregnancy. If he is not all knowing then he isn’t a god.

      • You have proof that the crooks in Chicago purchased their weapons in the surrounding areas by legal means? That any law currently on the books in Chicago, if applied to the surrounding areas, would reduce the crime rates there?

      • Kaci: Stop calling people with different opinions “dumb”. It does not make you another Einstein, especially that your gun laws related knowledge is not based on any facts.

          • Kaci, I have an FFL, I know gun laws. And obviously you are not “just playing” dumb regarding gun laws.

      • @Kaci Stahl:
More children are killed by abortions every year than are shot and killed by some moron with a gun that thinks it’s fun to kill people.

  7. How stupid are these people trying to pass gun laws. If every law abiding Citizen carried a gun they would be able to protect innocent people from the criminals that use their guns to injure people, not to protect. I believe that if we all, well all law abiding Citizen’s that is, Carried, I believe that the criminals would think twice before trying to rob or kill, not knowing how many innocent bystanders are armed and ready to defend one another.

  8. OK, he bought both pistols (not “assault weapons” legally and passed required background checks both times. They were purchased t differ times and no one suspect him of doing what he did so np “red flags”. He was an adult so no storage issue and no stolen gun. Where is the “urgent need” for more gun grabbing” Perhaps if they were infants “made comfortable” as a “choice” no one would care!

  9. simple. do you know, if you take guns away from democrats (democrooks), the murder rate would drop by 90 %.

  10. Don’t forget you are dealing with the uninformed people that just have to feel good about what they do even if it solves nothing.

  11. Primary voting day in Virginia is tomorrow, June 11.. Go to the polls and vote for the most conservative candidates on the ballot. That’s a good place to start to rid Virginia of the left wing loonies running the state.

    • Kavi Stahl, what they never tell you is how many lives are SAVED by a legal concealed carry gun owner. This is something you might want to investigate further instead of just parroting a leftist agenda.

  12. Gun control laws are all in violation of our Constitutional Rights.

If you don’t like it, move.

We are weak and we are getting weaker, all because we fail to execute traitors.

    • Actually no, gun control is not against the Constitution. Banning all guns would be against the Constitution. That isn’t even remotely what he is suggesting.

      • The definition of “infringe” in American English (from Cambridge.org):
        >>to act in a way that is against a law or that limits someone’s rights or freedom<< duh, do you need an explanation?
What if the gov't tells you that from now on you need a license to speak, you need a permit to carry a book, you can say a maximum of 10 words a minute, no shouting, and you can only speak to other people who also have a license to speak. 🙂 So would these laws infringe your 1st amendment rights?

  13. Hey ASSHOLE, your a LYING piece of RACIST BIGOT GARBAGE! I HOPE THE PEOPLE OF THAT STATE VOTE YOU OUT OF OFFICE, BECAUSE YOU ARE THE SAME SCUM AS PELOSI,SCHUMER,CLINTON’S,OBAMA’S,MUELLERCOMEY, NADLER! ETC, the DEM O CRAPS CORRUPTION FILLED CONGRESS PRICKS days are NUMBERED if OUR New GREAT Attorney General DOESN’T PUT everyone of these TRAITORS,TREASONOUS sons of BITCHES IN PRISON! THEN I GUESS IT’S GOING TO BE UP TO WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, OUR TRUE MILITARY,& THE REAL PATRIOTS INSIDE THE CORRUPTION FILLED GOVERNMENT TO TAKE DOWN THE DEM O CRACK HEADS SS GERMAN PARTY OF TODAY! TIME’S UP! WHY CONGRESSIONAL MEMBER’S CAN DO NOTHING FOR OVER 50 YEAR’S FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE & AMERICA & STILL HAVE A SEAT IN CONGRESS TELLS THE PEOPLE HOW FAKE & FIXED THE AMERICAN ELECTION FRAUD IS!
SO T IS COMING TIME FOR AMERICA TO TAKE A STAND TO FIGHT FOR (OUR)(COUNTRY)(HOMELAND) NO MORE DIVISION EVERYONE NEEDS TO PICK A SIDE TO THE FINISH!
WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT OUR CONSITUTION,RIGHTS,RULE OF EQUALITY JUSTICE TO ALL CITIZENS! SO D.C. EVERYONE OF YOU PRICKS ARE GOING TO PRISON ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!

  14. Every time there is a shooting the far left wana-be dictators want the honest people to give up their gun rights. The Globalists, the Swamp that Trump wants to drain, does not want us armed. Automatic weapons, (Machine Guns) were banned in the 30’s or late 20’s. Just enforce the laws, take the guns from the Criminals and let the honest citizens keep their weapons, and let them protect themselves. Any one who thinks differently, move to Europe, Australia, Canada, or any other country that has banned guns. Chicago has one of the highest murder rates with hand guns, and they also have the most gun las banning weapons. Do they want Virginia to turn into a State wide Chicago?

  15. WHY IS THIS IDIOT STILL IN OFFICE??????? Do the Dumbocrats ever punish their own, or are they too busy trying to get Trump. Dear God remove this POS and do it soon.

  16. Why does Ralph Northam look like he just took a big bite of a lemon? So he would prefer killing in the womb than allowing people to protect themselves from being sent to an early grave or post partum abortion!

  17. During the 2016 primaries, someone from one of the news stations asked a young lady at one of the colleges in California who she would vote for, and why. She replied Bernie Sanders because she liked his stance on wealth redistribution. My first thought was, when and if she ever accumulates wealth, I wonder how shew will feel when they start redistributing “her” wealth? When and if the folks who push taking away the right to keep and bear arms from law abiding citizens are successful, I don’t think they will be very happy when a “tyrannical government” takes over and does what they want, and we can’t do a thing about it, because we
    (the public) are unarmed.

  18. So the infanticide governor of Virginia is opposed to citizens 2nd Amendment rights and wants to impose further restrictions.
In his view it’s okay to kill newborns and law abiding citizens shouldn’t try to defend themselves against criminals.
What does this say about his values? Social Democrat ?

  19. Every time there’s a mass shooting, some of you blame an entire section of people. All the men in my family and there were 5 boys, in-laws, parents and grandparents were all in the Wars. WWII. Korea, WWI, and so on, and not a one of them killed an innocent here, yet most of them own guns. So, now, all you angry men on here……….how many of you were volunteers to fight for the country? You sure run to blame Democratic voters on each and every occasion! Why? Should you not blame the Commander in Chief who took the opportunity each time it was offered, to get a deferred enlistment!

    • Clara: So did Biden and some other democrats of that age and younger in Vietnam. It was just on the news the other day about the number of politicians who didn’t serve in WWII and or answer the draft for Vietnam due to deferments. You had to apply for a deferment not offered to you until you applied. It’s interesting how many of these politicians never served in any war and some of their reasons are worse than feet problems because during the world wars flat feet would knock you out of joining up, yes flat feet was seriously felt to be a problem and who knows, maybe it was in those days as men had to do a tremendous amount of walking and standing on your feet while fighting and keep moving. My Father with flat feet joined the Army right before the war because he was unemployed at 17 leaving school and home to help support his family due to the poor state he was born in and because he was already in when war both out his feet were forgotten also because he could shoot anything a long ways off while other men once war was declared had their feet determine whether they got to serve or not. When my Brothers went to Vietnam the feet thing didn’t matter because everything was vehicle traveling.

  20. It is time to pass H.R. 38: Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2019
The police Chief is absolutely right no law would have prevented this mass shooting, but this will work.
The ignorance of our politicians and gun free zones. It is time to pass H.R. 38: Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2019.
There is a city named Kennesaw in Georgia and they have a law that it is mandatory that every family must own a gun, this law in Kennesaw Georgia was pasted 15 years ago and in all that time there has only been one murder and crime is almost nonexistent. There is another city called Rifle in Colorado Where everyone openly carry a gun and they can’t remember the last time someone was arrested.

  21. Poster boy for the culture of death, yet… Is personal defense not real life? Jesus’ said long before guns, in Matt 12:29 & Mark 9:40: “How can anyone enter a strong man’s house & make off with his property unless he first ties him securely? Only then can he rob his house. He who is not with me is against me…”

Northam just can’t get it right once his conscience was seared.

  22. Just like the London mayor. He/it removed guns and now, heavens to Mergatroid, there is a stabbing fest going on. There is no such thing as ‘gun violence’, knife violence, or any other inanimate product violence.
The violence is PEOPLE violence and when any political hack thinks that depriving the citizen of any method of protection is required, that only means that the hack is looking to be re-elected or looking for a higher office.

  23. KACI………..Our Creator said, and I quote………I knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb….un quote. So I ask you, where did you get the idea that any court in any country has the right to deem the tissue just mere cells? Please explain that to me, or do you think you have the right to tell Him how it is. See if you can get away with that on judgement day!

    • David, YOUR Creator states: In Exodus 21:22 it states that if a man causes a woman to have a miscarriage, he shall be fined; however if the woman dies then he will be put to death. It should be apparent from this that the aborted fetus is not considered a living human being since the resulting punishment for the abortion is nothing more than a fine;   it is not classified by the bible as a capital offense.

He also gave us instructions for an abortion.

He also doesn’t count any child under the age of 1-month-old as a person.

  24. Tom Tucker June 10, 2019 at 7:43 pm
It’s always women like Kaci and metrosexual city sissies who look like men, who are ignorant of everything about he constitution, since they neve took history or took liberal revisionist history and have no understanding of why the amendments are there or what the intent behind each of them was.

  25. Kaci…………….We have many motor vehicle laws all across the land, and it does not stop crazy folks from breaking those laws. More people every year are killed with vehicles than with guns. So I don’t understand how you figure that more laws and regulations is the answer??????

  26. As a native of Virginia, we cannot allow these senseless laws to proposed by outsiders take away our 2nd amandment rights.

      • Maybe these people were smarter than you are:
“The constitution shall never be construed…to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.” – Alexander Hamilton
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” – Thomas Jefferson

  27. There should be no assault weapons plain and simple, you gun nuts are sick, even the majority of NRA members believe in stronger gun ownership checks in private sales, store sales and auction sales.

    • Assault weapons are already illegal to own by the people. If you don’t know the gun laws, don’t comment. Btw, why do the police/swat need assault weapons?

  28. A gun in one’s home is 22 times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a criminal assault or homicide, an attempted or completed suicide, or unintentional shooting than to kill or injure in self-defense. (Kellermann, et al, 1998 Journal of Trauma, 42:263-67)

In the U.S., 8 children and teenagers are killed, and more than 47 are injured, by a firearm every day. (CDC, NCHS, December 2006)

The risk of homicide in the home is three times greater in households with guns. (Kellermann, et al, New England Journal of Medicine, 1993)

The risk of suicide is five times greater in households with guns. (Kellermann et al, New England Journal of Medicine, 1992)

A 1990 law banning the sale of “Saturday Night Special” handguns in Maryland was associated with reduced use of these guns by criminals, and a 9% lower rate of firearm homicides in the state between 1990-1998 than would have been expected had there been no law.

Policies that deny handgun purchases to individuals with prior misdemeanor or felony convictions are associated with a decreased risk of subsequent convictions. Misdemeanants who had allowed to purchase handguns prior to the passage of a California state law prohibiting such purchases had a rate of criminal offending 29% higher than that among misdemeanants who were denied handgun purchases after the law took effect.

Every day in the U.S., 8 children and teenagers are killed and more than 47 are injured by a firearm.

In 2005, 595 California children and youth under age 21 were killed with firearms and 1,554 California children and youth under 21 were hospitalized with nonfatal firerarms injuries.

One-third of U.S. children live in homes with firearms. Almost half of homes with children and firearms keep a gun unlocked.

68% of the attackers in school shootings obtained the gun(s) from their own home or that of a relative. 61% of the attackers used handguns.

Many young children, including children as young as three years old, are strong enough to fire a handgun.

In 2004, guns were used to kill:

    5 people in New Zealand
    37 in Sweden
    56 in Australia
    73 in England and Wales
    184 in Canada

and 11,344 in the United States. God bless America.

Gun control advocate Junling Hu writes:

“A gun is a consumer product, sold for cash and purchased by individuals. While all other consumer products including teddy bears are subject to strict federal laws, guns are given a free pass. There are no safety regulation on guns thanks to the NRA’s lobbying efforts. Unsafe guns lead to accidents and death of adults and children at home. The ones who suffer are the gun owners.

“A gun is also a lethal weapon. Falling into the wrong hand, it enables a criminal to kill, a gang member to fight, and a teenager to seek revenge. Guns are deadlier than tobacco, alcohol or gambling combined. While all of these are off limits to youngsters, and although a 20-year-old can be arrested for drinking a beer, he can go scot-free for buying a gun.

“The debate over gun laws is muffled by the slogan, ‘We need less government regulation.’ It is as if government regulation is always wrong. These people ignore the fact that the government regulates every aspect of our life today. From water to air, to drugs and toys, everything touching us is regulated by law. Without the Clean Air Act, we would be breathing dirty air emissions from power plants; we would be drinking unsafe water. Without government regulation, medicines with fatal side effects would not be pulled off shelves and toys with lead poison would still be on the market. Government regulation affects our housing safety, our food quality, our driving safety (through speed limits and safety belt laws). As we live in a civilized society, the government serves as a mediator and enforcer as no individual can do.

“The freedom of owning a gun has virtually nothing to do with abiding gun laws. Anyone can own an automobile, but they still need to register and get licenses for their cars. Everyone has the freedom of owning a house, but they still have to watch for zoning regulation and fire safety requirements.

“Sensible gun laws govern manufacturing standard, product safety, and accessible by minors and criminals. Sensible gun laws govern the safety of our street, our school, and most importantly, the safety of our home.

“Common sense gun laws such as closing gun show loophole, assault weapon ban, and child-lock are fundamentally needed to be sure guns do not fall into wrong hands. Yet all these basic laws are fought against by the NRA lobby. How far can we go in this extremist view of so-called ‘individual freedom’? The consequence of suffering is demonstrated by deadly shooting every day, in every corner of America. Each day, over 80 people die from gun shooting, from accidents at home, to disputes with one’s neighbor, to random shootings on the street. The deadly consequence of ‘gun freedom’ are the death of a young four-year-old–shot while playing with guns, a 15-year-old while in heat of argument, and a 19-year-old walking out of a nightclub.

“America does not have to be a society soaked in blood, because the bloody consequences were caused by a powerful gun lobby that stripped away our basic protection from the law. Let’s work to enact sensible gun laws. We ask for sensible regulation on guns, as we ask for regulation on food and drugs. The gun issue is no longer a private matter but a public safety issue. It affects all of us. Let’s pass sensible gun laws now.”

The logic of gun control can best be understood by considering the analogy of the automobile. A car is a potentially lethal weapon. To drive a car, one must be trained, licensed, and have that license periodically renewed. And a car is designed solely as a means of transportation. Guns, on the other hand, are deliberately designed to kill people. It is not unreasonable to demand their regulation.

Guns are the second deadliest consumer product (after cars) on the market. By the end of the 1990s, firearms will likely supplant automobiles as the leading cause of product-related deaths throughout the United States. In 1990, American guns claimed an estimated 37,000 lives. There are no federal safety standards for the domestic manufacture of guns. There are no voluntary, industry-wide safety standards for the manufacture of guns.

Every two minutes, somebody somewhere in the United States is shot. Every 14 minutes, somebody dies from a gunshot wound. Each gun injury involving hospitalization costs $33,159. A license to sell a gun costs 83 cents per month.

A gun rolls off the assembly line in America every 10 seconds. America imports another gun every 11 seconds. There are 246,984 gun dealers in the United States, but only 240 inspectors to keep an eye on them.

There is a popular myth that handgun ownership makes people safer. In reality, the New England Journal of Medicine reports that a handgun in the home is 43 times more likely to kill the owner, a family member, or a friend than it is to kill an intruder. Over 75 percent of firearm deaths in a typical year involve handguns. The FBI Uniform Crime Statistics Report says that nationally, there were 38,317 firearm deaths in 1992, but fewer than 300 justifiable homicides.

Another myth is that gun control laws don t make a difference. In reality, strict handgun regulation saves lives. In Washington, DC, a tougher gun law actually reduced homicides by 25 percent through the mid-1980s. Again, the New England Journal of Medicine reports that 47 lives were saved in Washington, DC, in a typical year studied, because of that city’s handgun ban.

Most other industrialized nations have virtual bans on handgun sales. In 1990, handguns were used in the homicides of 13 people in Sweden, 91 in Switzerland, 87 in Japan, 22 in Great Britain, and 68 in Canada, compared to 10,567 in the United States.

Is gun control constitutional? The Second Amendment refers to “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” Roger Tatarian, professor emeritus of journalism at California State University, Fresno, notes, however, that “things can change over time” with regards to the original intent of the founders.

The Third Amendment, for example, protects citizens against compulsory quartering of troops in private homes. Technology has also made obsolete the constitutional provision giving Congress the right to declare war. “No president who is warned that a hostile missile is en route…has time nowadays to ask Congress for a declaration of war before responding,” states Tartarian. “He can commit the country to an all-out war simply by pressing a button.”

Tartarian observes: “The Constitution certainly does not ban private ownership of weapons; that would have been unthinkable for a people still living in an often hostile natural environment and where many depended on hunting for a livelihood. But a tradition of owning arms is one thing and a constitutional guarantee is quite another. They ought not be confused

According to Tatarian: “The Second Amendment as it now exists evolved from a draft offered by James Madison on June 8, 1789. His intent very clearly was to tie the constitutional right to own arms to service in official militias regulated by state governments.” Madison’s original proposal reads:

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country: but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms shall be compelled to render military service in person.”

The final version of the amendment which emerged from a House-Senate conference on September 25, 1789, also tied the constitutional right to bear arms to service in a militia, and stated that such militias are to be “well regulated”:

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Handgun control is constitutional. The courts have repeatedly ruled that the Second Amendment does not apply to individuals outside the context of “a well regulated militia.” A handgun control ordinance was upheld by the U.S. Seventh Court of Appeals in 1982, which issued the following statement: “We conclude that the right to keep and bear handguns is not guaranteed by the Second Amendment.”

The Supreme Court let the decision stand by refusing to hear the appeal of the handgun lobby. The Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Cruikshank that the Second Amendment doesn’t mean anything except “(the right to keep and bear arms) shall not be infringed by Congress.”

This 1876 ruling established that states and localities are not prevented from enacting their own gun control laws–and they remain free to do so to this day. In 1980, the Supreme Court reconfirmed that “these legislative restrictions on the use of firearms do not trench upon any constitutionally protected liberties.”

Guns should be regulated like other consumer products. Handguns and assault rifles should be banned, and ammunition should be taxed heavily.

The Democratic Party platform should support: Animal Rights, Defending the Affordable Care Act, Ending Citizens United, Ending Marijuana Prohibition, Giving Greater Visibility to Pro-Life Democrats, Gun Control, Net Neutrality, Raising the Minimum Wage to $15 an Hour, Responding to the Scientific Consensus on Global Warming, and a Sustainable Energy Policy.

    • Okay Vasu Murti, I gave up a piece of my and body parts defending America in the Naval Amphibious Forces. Now, I’m an old man. I have a few guns. I will not give them up. You want to take guns away from decent, honest citizens. The criminals will still have guns. YOU want to make the rest of us victims. Other than your mouth babel, what have done for America! You want to make me and other citizens victims. YOU ARE AN ELITIST. GET THE HELL OUT OF AMERICA. YOU WANT TO MAKE DECENT, HONEST CITIZENS VICTIMS!

    • Vasu: Guns save more lives than they take; prevent more injuries than they inflict.
Guns used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law -abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times a year.—or about 6,850 times a day. This means that each year, firearms are used 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives.
Of the 2.5 million citizens who use their guns to defend themselves every year, the overwhelming majority merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their ATTACKERS. Less than 8% of the time, a citizen will kill or wound their ATTACKER.
As many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse.
Even anti-gun Clinton researchers concede that guns are used 1.5 million times annually for self-defense. According to the Clinton Justice Dept., there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. The Nat. Institute of Justice published this figure in 1997 as part of “Guns in America”– a study which was authorized by noted anti-gun criminologists Phillip Cook and Jens Ludwig.
Armed citizens kill more crooks than do police. Citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as police do every year.(1,527 to 606) And readers of Newsweek learned that only 2% of civilian shooting involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The “error rate” for the police was 11%, more than 5 times as high.

      • Nope.

In 2012, there were 8,855 criminal gun homicides in the FBI’s homicide database, but only 258 gun killings by private citizens that were deemed justifiable, which the FBI defines as “the killing of a felon, during the commission of a felony, by a private citizen.” That works out to one justifiable gun death for every 34 unjustifiable gun deaths.

    • Vasu, glad to see you waste so much of your un-precious time trying to convince intelligent people that they really don’t have a God given right to protect themselves, their families, their property, their communities, from criminals and tyrants BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!

Now, get back to cleaning your room. Your mom is upstairs and has your breakfast waiting.

  29. Kaci………read on………. regulated militia, right of the PEOPLE to own and bare arms. Quit trying to twist the constitution to fit your interpretation like the Global Puppet Masters want.

    • A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

You are not a well-regulated militia. Just saying

      • Kaci: How difficult is it for you to understand the 2nd?? The 1st part of the sentence with the “militia” is written to protect the states. The 2nd part of the sentence with the “people” is to protect the rights of the people (duh). Why is this so hard to understand? I quoted 3 US Supreme Court decisions supporting this in a previous comment.

      • Kaci: The 1st part of the 2nd Amendment with the “militia” protects the state, the 2nd part with the “people” protects the individual rights of the people, duh. Why is it so difficult to understand?

  30. Vasu………….We can tell you are drunken on the communist kool-aid. We realize that you will never change your point of view. So there’s no use in arguing the Constitutional Rights point with you. You are way too indoctrinated by your puppet masters.

  31. Vasu………..motor vehicle fatalities out number handgun deaths every year by a far margin. Come up with another excuse to deny law abiding citizens the means to protect themselves. All your so-called statistics won’t cut it. You drank the Global Puppet Masters KOOL-AID. So you are not going to change our minds with your so called lame research.

          • Yeah Kaci, and the other countries where the police don’t carry is where the extremely high crimes are happening too!! SMH

          • Here are the real facts of countries were police to not carry guns vs crimes:

In Iceland, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland excepted), the police do not carry firearms unless the situation is expected to involve gunfire from the opposing force.

            Crime levels:

            Iceland: 22.22%
            New Zealand: 44.44%
            Norway: 29.93%
            United Kingdom: 48%

            United States: 55.84%

So the crime rate is higher in the US than in the countries where police do not carry guns.

  32. Hey Ralph, GOOD BOOK says “thou shall not kill” I’ll bet you squirm if in a House of God.. Nothing proposed would have stopped the Devil in Va Beach. You all are just making it almost impossible for us Good Folks to protect self and others. 2nd says “no infringement” yet all this false claiming would not stop the senseless killing. Beware of those that preach false thoughts. Jesus says these are devils. What is definition of assault weapon? The uneducated would say “it looks mean and threatening” as does all weapons. Think twice before messing with any weapon holder. Perhaps we should ban all cars that look like they would go fast. My training even throwing rocks could be part of an assault. Many swords used in Civil War assaults. Gotta pull trigger once and one comes out. What if the bad guys/gals come at you in groups of more than one. Most people will miss with first shot. A charging bear, you better be using a one shot cannon…According to OBaMA, any and all can get guns and I’m still waiting on my machine gun that I ordered from Sears back in the 70s. I think California only allows you one bullet a month, maybe not but here come the “INFRINGEMENTS”…..In closing, my 40 cal did I believe save me from 2 questionable persons following me from a Walmart at 2am. They went the other way when I placed on top of car….

  33. Joe ( the dumb ass ) plumber don’t open your mouth unless you know what you are talking about . Any thing can be considered an assault weapon.. you gun control idiots label them as assault weapon too promote your gun control idiocy …gunowners have the right too own firearms …it’s the one that fall out of the chair and commit the bad acts of shooting people ..guns don’t kill people ,people kill people … And for Kaci what don’t you understand about gun rights and ownership .. you complain about abortion rights , it’s like this women should use better judgment when it comes too having babies ,, just don’t go out get pregnant ,and then six months down the road they decide too get rid of the fetus .. so what’s right and what’s wrong …

  34. Last I heard, wealthy gun control advocate, Michael Bloomberg, has 27 armed body guards. Is he going to have his body guards turn in their guns? NO. Bloomberg still has armed body guards. Why? Because he thinks he’s better than the rest of us!

      • Riiiggghhhhtttt, tyrants and communist appeasing liberals will leave gun owners alone if they’ll only give them this 1 little inch of their God given right.
We aren’t STUPID. They’ve already been caught behind the scenes admitting they want total confiscation, so just STFU and leave decent Americans alone.

  35. and for black face Northam , he’s about as clueless as the rest of you liberal morons when it comes too gun ownership and gun rights , and what drives people too do what they do.. gun control laws won’t work no matter how many they have on the books .. only the law abiding gunowners obey the laws .. not street thugs or drug dealers ..how many punks on the street will hand over a illegally obtained firearm , how many will obey gun laws , not the first damn one …

  36. Let’s arm all of our government officials withguards who carry slingshots. The gun is as much of the offense of weapon as it is an offense of weapon . In the right hands it is not a crime to carry . In the wrong hands any weapon is dangerous

  37. Kaci Stahl: If abortions aren’t baby’s Then when I have horses ultra-sounded 2 weeks after last breeding to make sure they are in foal (have an embryo or Baby horse). We have cows preg checked for thier babies. If a life is not at conception how does anything get born! How do grass and plants grow!
Also you need to read the Federalist papers from our founders ( these are the letters our founding fathers wrote to each other to come up with our present day Constitution) It lists the reason for each of our first 10 God given rights. The 2nd is in case our government gets oppressive we have a means of stopping the oppression.
Guns are a tool just like a drill or saw, they can not get up and kill anything by themselves. I live on a farm and need a lot of tools, a gun is another tool I use just like a truck.

      • Jackie Mason said about anti-gun Bloomberg with 12 armed body guards “As if his life counts, but yours is not important? If guns are not important and nobody should have a gun to protect himself, why does Bloomberg have 12 bodyguards? Why doesn’t he stand there with 12 rabbis? Why do they have guns? Instead of guns they should have pastrami sandwiches.”

          • Then, if you own guns, why are you wanting them regulated? That means a cop could come by your house and confiscate YOUR guns too. One quick question: Why do you own a gun? Hmmm?

          • I think you are confusing the word regulate with confiscate. We regulate vehicles, we do not conficate them. See the difference?
I own guns because I love to target shoot. All my guns are kept off-site in a locked area. I do not have any guns in my home.

  38. Of gun owners in America, less than 1/10,000th of one percent have used their guns for crimes. Laws predicating the taking away of certain guns, or all guns, will not prevent the bad guys from committing crimes with guns. Around the world, for whatever is said about us we are known as the land that can’t be taken over because there is “a gun behind every tree.” The answer to nuts committing crazy crimes with guns is, for more citizens to be proactive and have guns to stop such events.

  39. I find it odd that after each mass shooting the interviews are all people saying buns are bad. Why is it I hear people saying “I just wish someone would have had a gun to stop him”.
How odd is it the press never happens to find any of the people that would rather have had their children or
co workers saved by an armed by stander?

  40. Isn’t this the governor that signed into law about allowing mothers to murder their babies AFTER the baby is born? He freaking danced for joy after signing that bill! He’s a freak of nature! Most people strive to protect babies but this ass sees allowing a mother to murder her baby as “the mother’s right”! ” Virginia is for lovers” but not their “bi-product(s)” should be added to that phrase!

      • Has regulating made any difference in Chicago? I don’t think so!! Only thing you are wanting to do is make it harder for law abiding citizens have a harder time buying guns. What’s that gonna do? Absolutely NOTHING!

        • As I stated before, you cannot just regulate in one city. All cities and states must have the same regulations and then it will work.

          • Regulate: to control or supervise (something, especially a company or business activity) by means of rules and regulations.
So you actually think this would work with the criminals? I don’t think so. According to this, it seems to me like regulate and control is the same thing.

  41. The Government (federal) has hundreds of laws about ownership of firearms, however, most are not enforced because the Feds do not have the ability to enforce them. Take the purchase of firearms, a check must be made to NCIC to see if the individual is on the list of FORBIDDEN individuals who cannot own a firearm, daily, there are hundreds of request denied by the government and yet none are charged with attempting to purchase a firearm, WHY. The knee jerk reaction to a murder(s) is we have to pass a law against this, well as previously stated, that law is already on the books, so whats next ? The gun is a ernet object and cannot by itself harm anyone, but some nut job picks it up, it does what the nut job tells it to do, no firearm has AI as of now. So blame the vehicle in a OUI death accident, not the driver is the same rationale. As far as abortion, where their is a pulse, there is life period, ask any EMT.

  42. What a jackass. Does he not know most of this is already law ? ? ?
    Universal background checks
    — Child access prevention … This is common sense for all gun owners
    — One gun a month limits … This is an infringement of our constitutional rights
    — Banning assault weapons, including bump stocks .. We can not now own a machine gun — — Requirement to report lost or stolen guns .. This is already required & common sense
    — Allowing localities to ban guns from municipal buildings .. Gee shooting was done in a “Gun Free Zone Building” …. So that idea is idiotic as criminals do not obey or heed the laws.
    — Red flag laws … Another infringement as there is no requirement to prove something before action is taken against lawful gun owners … This will end up at the Supreme Court where it likely will be invalidated at Federal & State Levels

  43. What a jackass. Does he not know most of this is already law ? ? ?
Universal background checks … We already have the NICS checks for this
    — Child access prevention … This is common sense for all gun owners
    — One gun a month limits … This is an infringement of our constitutional rights
    — Banning assault weapons, including bump stocks .. We can not now own a machine gun — — Requirement to report lost or stolen guns .. This is already required & common sense

  44. Article: “The special session will convene shortly, and many law-abiding gun owners are nervous about what will happen.”

LOL! Ralph Northam, should he pursue this gross violation of our God given rights, noted by the 2nd Amendment, HE should be the one that is ‘nervous’. Fortunately, Virginians have that right to protect themselves from wannabe tyrants like Northam.

  45. VASU, copy and pasted: Is gun control constitutional? The Second Amendment refers to “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” Roger Tatarian, professor emeritus of journalism at California State University, Fresno, notes, however, that “things can change over time” with regards to the original intent of the founders.

Yes, things CAN change over time (evil seeking tyranny hasn’t), I think the Founding Fathers would be perfectly agreeable that ‘the People’ be able to possess whatever a potential tyrant possesses. Technology to follow politicians, record their calls, texts, and infringe on every facet of their privacy. What ever the tyrant has, the people should have, aside from nukes, which are just un-necessary.

  46. Kaci I have owned an AR15 for 12 years and I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Mine has not shot anyone yet. Wanted to ask you how come the lefties gun restrictions don’t work in ILL. The way you fell about abortions all I can do is pray for you!!! God help you!

    • Chicago gun laws don’t work because of surrounding cities and states that do not have strict gun laws. For gun laws to work, all cities and states must have the same laws.

  47. I agree, Moe C Fuss!! MY husband has both the AR15 and the AK and neither one of those has killed anyone yet either. Neither has my 357 Magnum, my 38 special Body Guard, my 9mm, my 40, my 45, my 380, nor my 12 Ga. just to mention a few. Not one of these mentioned has ever killed anything unless of course you want to talk about targets or plastic bottles. LOL

  48. GUN Control PHOOY! IT”S PEOPLE CONTROL PURE AND SIMPLE!!!!! The Sandy hook shooter broke 42 laws before and during the shootings, yet EVERY TIME a shooting occurs left wing politicians want more anti-gun laws! I say enough! No new anti gun bills should be allowed, until all anti gun laws are checked for duplicate laws, unfunded and unenforced laws! All duplicate, unfunded and unenforced laws must be REPEALED before new bills could be introduced!! New bills must cite Constitutional authority, and funding amount, source, and responsible enforcing agency(ies). If funding is withdrawn due to budget constraints or other reason the law must be automatically repealed! The other constraint on laws must be that all laws must be obeyed by everyone! Most especially the Congress persons and Senators who introduce them! No more anti-gun Dianne Feinstein who introduces Anti Gun Bill after anti Gun Bill, and exempts herself from every one. She has all the guns, CCW permits, AND ARMED SECURITY AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE!!!

  49. I say IF the legislature and the Governor pass non sensible “Gun Laws” and crime goes up as it will, ALL politicians who voted to pass this bill and the Governor who signs the bill should be charged as accessories to the crimes committed due to their gun control dementia!

  50. Hey Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, can’t you read The Second Amendment. “The Right of the People to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed” If you don’t like that, move to some other country” I gave up a piece of my life and some body parts defending this county. I would do it again if I could! You are unfit to serve!

  51. the people need to let this ass know that there will be a lot of court action taken against him and the law and that he will have a hard time getting elected for any office after this

  52. Those that think abortion is okay should be told what actually happens during the process. I listened to a doctor explain how the arms, legs, torso, and head is torn from inside the whom. But some one that wants to protect his family, friends or himself is unable to because someone else doesn’t like guns isn’t right. I say lets go back to the early 1800’s when most people carried.
