It’s an understatement to say that Pope Francis has been a controversial figure.
The Pope has taken leftist positions on almost every single issue.
Now Pope Francis made one announcement about marriage that stunned everyone.
Pope Francis recently gave support of civil unions between same-sex couples, which countermands the Catholic Church’s traditional position.
Pope Francis said in a new documentary film called Francesco, “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable because of it…What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered . . . I stood up for that.”
The Pope’s statements created confusion among Catholics because they were in direct contravention of a 2003 Vatican document approved by Saint John Paul II.
The document read in part, “Laws in favour of homosexual unions are contrary to right reason because they confer legal guarantees, analogous to those granted to marriage, to unions between persons of the same sex . . . Given the values at stake in this question, the State could not grant legal standing to such unions without failing in its duty to promote and defend marriage as an institution essential to the common good.”
The Pope’s stunning remarks seem to be a reversal on his pro-traditional marriage stand from not long ago.
In 2016, Pope Francis came out in defense of a Mexican bishop advocating for traditional marriage.
He said, “I willingly join the Bishops of Mexico in supporting the efforts of the Church and civil society in favor of the family and of life . . . which at this time require special pastoral and cultural attention worldwide.”
In retrospect, his words seem tepid when compared to his recent stance on civil unions.
It’s nothing for Pope Francis to take progressive positions on hot-button issues.
He’s railed against border security, and echoed the fiery rhetoric of radical environmentalists with near-paganistic fervor.
The Pope has also advocated for more socialistic economic policies.
That doesn’t come as a major surprise considering he’s a devotee of liberation theology.
Pope Francis remains a stalwart on abortion, however, calling it a moral abomination.
The Pope’s words on civil unions in the documentary Francesco are certainly going to spur Catholics to call for clarification on the church’s position.
