Jerry Falwell Jr.’s resignation as President of Liberty University has raised many questions.
He has been mostly silent since leaving.
But he just broke his silence with an unbelievable lawsuit that will tarnish his reputation forever.
Jerry Falwell Jr. was once of the most influential evangelical leaders in America up until a few months ago.
He used that influence to help President Donald Trump and other conservative politicians.
But his reputation began taking a likely unrepairable turn after compromising photos came out of him.
The most compromising picture shows Falwell on a yacht with his arm around a woman who isn’t his wife, with both of their midsections being pulled up on their shirts, and their pants unzipped, as Falwell appears to hold an alcoholic drink in his hand.
Falwell says that the picture was of his wife’s assistant, and it was meant as a joke.
But to Liberty University officials it was a bridge too far and he was asked to take a leave of absence, as it was far from the first scandal he found himself in.
Then things got really weird.
News broke that Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife had been allegedly carrying on an affair for nearly a decade with a 20-something pool boy in Miami.
Sparing the cringeworthy details, the long and the short of it was that Falwell’s wife would sleep with the pool boy while Jerry watched.
The Falwell’s denied the story, claiming the pool boy made the whole affair up and that they were victims of blackmail.
He was forced to resign from the University within days.
But now Falwell is suing Liberty University for the way the board forced him out.
In a statement he attacks his former University’s staff, stating that they have damaged his reputation by jumping to conclusions.
Falwell said he was “saddened that University officials, with whom I have shared so much success and enjoyed such positive relationships, jumped to conclusions about the claims made against my character, failed to properly investigate them, and then damaged my reputation following my forced resignation.”
“While I have nothing but love and appreciation for the Liberty community, and I had hoped to avoid litigation, I must take the necessary steps to restore my reputation and hopefully help repair the damage to the Liberty University brand in the process,” Falwell added.
This lawsuit sure isn’t likely to help rebuild his reputation.
But he likely understands that, and may be launching the lawsuit because his reputation has already been thoroughly tarnished among evangelicals.
